Jesus tells His disciples to be ready for the final judgement, and illustrates his point with the parable of the ten bridesmaids and some more description of how those who obey will be sorted from those who don’t: Mark 13:32–37; Matthew 24:36–51; Luke 21:34–38; Matthew 25:1–46

Jesus explained to His disciples that he would return, but no one, not even He, knew the exact time (the ‘day or the hour’):

^{Matthew 24:42-44} So you, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know what day your Lord is coming. Understand this: If a homeowner knew exactly when a burglar was coming, he would keep watch and not permit his house to be broken into. You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.
